According to a security source, on Thursday, an insurgent attack in northern Burkina Faso claimed the lives of four soldiers and ten military volunteers, the VDP. The attack took place in conjunction with the country’s military chief’s arrival.
A unit of soldiers and Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP) members were the target of the attack on Wednesday in Zorkoum.
“We have sadly lost four soldiers and 10 volunteers. On the enemy’s side, around 20 soldiers were neutralised,” the source said.
Another security source said “several” members of the security forces were killed, while a local official confirmed the attack but did not give a toll.
According to a local source, the team in Zorkoum was entrusted with providing protection for employees repairing Kaya’s water supplies, which are located around 10 kilometers away and have frequently been attacked.
Captain Ibrahim Traore, the head of the Junta, flew into Kaya early on Wednesday for a 48-hour stay.
A senior security official said that he visited the attack site “a few hours later” to “pay tribute to the bravery of the forces, who repelled the attack and inflicted enormous casualties.”
After assuming power in September, Traore vowed to reclaim lost territory, and he has based much of his strategy on the VDP.
