Interior Minister Orders Urgent Inquiry into Alleged Mistreatment of Inmates in Calabar

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, has condemned a disturbing video circulating on Facebook that claims inmates at Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar are enduring severe mistreatment, including being served poorly prepared beans for breakfast.

The Minister has characterised these allegations as a serious violation of the standards of care and dignity that inmates are entitled to. He has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, asserting that those found responsible will face accountability.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasised that any deficiencies in food quality, sanitation, or overall inmate welfare will not be tolerated. He stated, “the service must ensure inmates are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. I will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody.”

He assured the public that the results of the investigation will be disclosed and that appropriate disciplinary measures will be enforced based on the findings.
