International Court of Justice Issues Order for Israel to Address Gaza Famine

Judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have directed Israel to take immediate and effective measures to ensure the timely delivery of essential food supplies to the Palestinian population in Gaza, as reported by Reuters.

The ICJ emphasised the deteriorating living conditions faced by Palestinians in Gaza, noting the alarming spread of famine and starvation.

The Court’s order shows a critical shift, stating that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer merely at risk of famine but are now experiencing its devastating effects firsthand.

These directives were issued in response to a request by South Africa, which forms part of an ongoing case accusing Israel of state-led genocide in Gaza.

Earlier in January, the ICJ, commonly known as the World Court, instructed Israel to abstain from any actions that could be construed as falling under the Genocide Convention and to ensure that its military forces refrain from committing genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza.

In the recent order, the Court reaffirmed the January measures while additionally stipulating that Israel must facilitate unimpeded access to essential services and humanitarian aid, including food, water, electricity, medical supplies, and medical care, for all Palestinians across Gaza.

The judges specified that this could be achieved by expanding the capacity and number of land crossing points and keeping them operational for as long as necessary.

Israel has been instructed to submit a comprehensive report within one month detailing the steps taken to implement the Court’s ruling.
