A day after protests associated with the murder of a young man in police custody, the Mauritanian government turned off mobile internet access on Wednesday.
According to the reports, all mobile internet connections were down, but landlines were still operational and business as usual resumed.
Demonstrations were held to call for “justice for Omar Diop” in the nation’s capital Nouakchott and in Boghé in the south.
According to the police, Diop was detained on Monday night in Nouakchott after participating in a brawl.
He had respiratory issues and passed away in the hospital a few hours later. According to the interior ministry, an autopsy and inquest are being conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death.
