Iran Prepares Retaliatory Strike on Israel, Reports Say

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly ordered a retaliatory attack on Israel, as cited by three Iranian officials to the New York Times. The directive was issued after Khamenei reviewed the extent of damage inflicted by Israel’s recent attack on Iran, which impacted missile production sites, air defence systems around Tehran, and a major port in southern Iran.

The Iranian officials stated that Khamenei emphasised the importance of response, suggesting that failing to act would signify a concession of defeat.

Iranian military leaders have begun compiling a list of potential targets in Israel, though they may delay action until after the US elections to avoid affecting the political landscape, particularly any potential advantage for Donald Trump.

In alignment with its ally Hezbollah, which is currently engaged in conflict with Israel in Lebanon, Iran also signalled support for Hezbollah after intensified attacks on its leadership and arsenal.

Israeli leaders have likewise signaled readiness to further target Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked that Israel’s recent attacks have expanded its operational range, providing “greater freedom of action” within Iran.
