Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting Israel on Tuesday, retaliating against Israeli military operations aimed at Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. The missile attack led to alarms ringing across Israel, with explosions reported in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley as residents sought refuge in bomb shelters. Journalists broadcasting live on state television were seen taking cover as the missiles struck.
There are reports of several missiles being intercepted over Jordanian airspace, with Israeli media reporting that up to 100 missiles had been fired. The Israeli Defence Forces had earlier warned that any ballistic missile attack from Iran would likely be extensive, advising the public to seek safety in designated shelters.
Iran’s missile strike follows Israel’s intensified military campaign in Lebanon, which included limited ground incursions. These developments mark the largest escalation of regional conflict since the Gaza hostilities last year. The Iranian regime vowed to retaliate after several key Hezbollah figures were killed in Israeli airstrikes.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden expressed America’s readiness to assist Israel in its defence efforts. In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, Biden revealed he had discussed the situation with Vice President Kamala Harris and top national security officials. “We discussed how the United States is prepared to help Israel defend against these attacks, and protect American personnel in the region,” Biden said.
