Police said a gang of angry youths attacked a police station in Ghana‘s northern town of Nkoranza, killing one person, injuring five others and setting some detainees free.
During the incident, protesters also managed to free six detained individuals from police custody, according to authorities.
On Tuesday, protests erupted when a 28-year-old trader Alber Akwasi Donkor was allegedly killed by police during an operation targeting armed robbery suspects in the region.
According to a local station citing a hospital official, those injured during the fights are being treated for gunshot wounds. One of the patients was in a coma and had a bullet lodged in his chest.
“We have about nine people who have suffered various injuries; some have been sent to the theatre to be operated on,” John Bremini is quoted as saying by Joyonline site.
The Police has however identified the leaders of the irate youth and are trailing them.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Akuffo-Dampare has ordered the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the alleged killing of Akwasi Donkor.
In a press statement Tuesday, Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Kwasi Ofori said, the IGP “spoke with the family [of the deceased] on the telephone and has constituted a high-powered delegation led by COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Director-General/Administration to visit Nkoranza tomorrow [Wednesday, for further engagement with all stakeholders.”
The police have advised the public to refrain from making incorrect assumptions that could influence the investigation’s conclusion.
Armed officers were claimed to have picked up the deceased, a footballer and digital television installer, from his Nkoranza South residence at 2am on April 24, 2022, in an unregistered vehicle on an anti-armed robbery operation.
Exactly one year ago, in April 2021, the Ghana Police arrested nine alleged Nigerian Jailbreakers, an incident that triggered reactions across the continent.
