The Africa Climate Week (ACW) 2023 kicks off today, September 4 in Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi, and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), has revealed that it would be actively participating in the event which will last from 4 September to 8 September 2023.
Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera, in a statement, said the agency aspires to launch initiatives that aim towards facilitating Africa’s transition towards renewable energy sources.
La Camera also said IRENA will address climate challenges, by working closely with participating countries like the United States, Europe as well as other African countries.
According to the IRENA DG, the move is necessary as a result of the need to intensify efforts towards ensuring Africa’s fast transition towards renewable energy sources for addressing climate challenges and other related issues.
The Africa Climate Week 2023 is hosted by the government of Kenya, and is organised in parallel with the Africa Climate Summit on 4 September to 6 September 2023, also hosted by Kenya.
The two events come just few months away from the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28), which will convene from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
ACW 2023 is an annual event organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank, with the support of regional partners: African Union (AU), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The event “brings together leaders from governments, businesses, international organisations and civil society to explore ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to the mounting fallout from the climate crisis,” the United Nations explains.
