The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on Thursday, commenced public hearing of South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.
Israel will face the court as South Africa presents hard evidence in the case filed on December 29 2023. South Africa accused Israel of genocide and violation of the UN Genocide Convention with its actions in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
Adila Hassim, a Lawyer delivering the opening argument of South Africa’s Gaza genocide case to the ICJ, said Israel “has killed an unparalleled and unprecedented number of civilians”.
Her words:
“In the first three weeks alone, following October 7, Israel deployed 6000 bombs per week. At least 200 times, it has deployed 2000-pound bombs in certain areas of Palestine designated as safe.
“These bombs have also decimated the north including refugee camps. 2000-pound bombs are some of the biggest and most destructive bombs available. They are dropped by lethal fighter jets that are used to strike targets in the ground by one of the world’s most resourced armies.
“Israel has killed an unparalleled and unprecedented number of civilians, with the full knowledge of how many civilian lives each bomb will take.
The Israel-Hamas war has dragged on for over three months, and over 23,300 people have been reported killed since after October 7. South Africa will also appeal to the UN court to halt Israel’s genocide on Gaza.
Palestinians Appreciate South Africa for Gaza Genocide Case
Palestinians rallied round the Nelson Mandela Square to gratitude to South Africa’s genocide case against Israel which is presently being heard at the ICJ at the Hague.
“Today, we say thank you. Thank you to South Africa for filing the case against [occupation] at the ICJ.
“We believe that many countries felt our pain, but South Africa decided to put it materially on paper and file a case,” said Ramallah Mayor, Issa Kassis who was present at the rally on Thursday.
