Israel, Hezbollah Exchange Heavy Fire

Following Israel’s pre-emptive airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, Hezbollah claimed to have fired over 320 rockets into Israel, marking the start of what it calls a “large-scale” operation.

The exchange of rocket fire has intensified along Israel’s border with Lebanon.

Hezbollah stated that it has deployed drones and launched Katyusha rockets at 11 military sites in northern Israel. The group also confirmed the death of one of its fighters, Ayman Kamel Idriss, in Khiam, southern Lebanon.

While Hezbollah did not provide details on the circumstances of his death, the confirmation came after Lebanon’s health ministry reported that an Israeli strike had killed one person in a car in the same city.

In a statement, Hezbollah said that Idriss died “while performing his national duty in defence of Lebanon and the south.”

Israel and Hezbollah have been trading cross-border fire for months, but Hezbollah described today’s actions as the first phase of its response to Israel’s assassination of its senior commander, Fuad Shukr, on July 30.
