Two aid workers affiliated with the British humanitarian organisation Oxfam were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Jabalia in northern Gaza.
In a statement posted on X late Saturday, Oxfam said: “Oxfam mourns the tragic loss of our partners at Juzoor, Dr. Ahmad Al-Najar and midwife Laila Jneid, killed by Israeli air strikes on Jabalia.” The organisation confirmed that the two were providing vital healthcare services in Gaza.
Oxfam condemned the attack, calling it a war crime, and reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to protect humanitarian workers and civilians.
The Israeli military operation in northern Gaza, now in its 16th day, has intensified, with Jabalia experiencing its third ground assault since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023.
Despite a UN Security Council resolution urging an immediate ceasefire, Israel continues its recent offensive in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas. According to local health authorities, more than 42,500 people have been killed by Israeli forces, most of them women and children, and over 99,600 injured. The ongoing invasion has led to the displacement of almost the entire population of Gaza, causing severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies under an ongoing blockade.
Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
