Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, has reportedly been linked to a major espionage scandal involving the surveillance of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and high-ranking Italian officials, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.
Allegedly, Mossad collaborated with a Milan-based private investigation firm, comprising former security service members, which stole sensitive personal data on political figures for potential extortion.
The scandal has led to the arrest of four suspects, with many others under investigation, while cybersecurity experts believe the Interior Ministry’s servers may have been breached. Italian media dubbed the affair a high-level conspiracy, involving organised crime, intelligence officials, and possibly Mossad.
Prime Minister Meloni condemned the breach as a threat to democracy, and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has called for an urgent inquiry, citing concerns over compromised state secrets. An Italian intelligence insider is reportedly the prime suspect, accused of gathering data from government ministries to sell to clients.
The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported a visit by two Israeli nationals, suspected to be intelligence agents, to the firm under investigation, where they allegedly sought information on Iranian gas deals potentially connected to Italian energy giant ENI.
