The Italian Ministry of Interior has announced the extension of a humanitarian corridor from Libya to Italy, providing a crucial lifeline for refugees and asylum-seekers facing heightened protection risks. UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, warmly welcomes this decision, emphasising Italy’s commitment to the safety and well-being of those in desperate need.
On December 20, 2023, the Italian government committed to evacuating 1,500 refugees and asylum-seekers in Libya over the next three years by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). UNHCR will collaborate with partners in the identification and selection process, prioritising individuals based on their most critical protection needs.
Aseer Al-Madaien, UNHCR’s Chief of Mission in Libya, expressed appreciation, stating, “We welcome this decision that aims to provide long-term solutions to some of the most vulnerable refugees at heightened risks.”
This commitment follows the successful departure of 1,300 people from Libya to Italy since 2017 through evacuation and resettlement programmes. UNHCR extended its appreciation to the Libyan authorities for facilitating the exit of refugees and asylum-seekers.
Refugees and asylum-seekers in Libya, like many other places, continue to face serious challenges, and UNHCR actively advocates for comprehensive solutions to their problems. “We call upon the international community to show more solidarity by providing safe and secure pathways out of Libya,” Al-Madaien continues.
The UNHCR urged other states to follow Italy’s lead in opening humanitarian corridors, easing pressure on host countries, and contributing to a compassionate response to the urgent needs of refugees in Libya and beyond.
