The Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire and the Pharaohs of Egypt have been drawn into difficult groups ahead of the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympic.
Ivory Coast were drawn alongside Germany, Brazil and Saudi Arabia in group D while Egypt, Africa’s other team to the tournament were drawn alongside Spain, Argentina and Australia in group C.
Both teams qualified as finalists from the African U-23 Championship.
In the female category, Africa’s sole representative Zambia have been drawn alongside the People’s Republic of China, Brazil and the Netherlands.
Zambia qualified after defeating Cameroon in the finals of the qualifiers and have qualified for the Olympic for the first time. They are Africa’s 5th female team to qualify for the Olympic after Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon and Ghana.
Nigeria’s Dream Team I was the first team from Africa to win an Olympic Gold medal at Atlanta in 1996 before Cameroon repeated the feat four years later in Sydney, Australia.
The Dream Team VI were Africa’s only medal winners from football in the 2016 Olympics in Rio as the Mikel Obi-led Nigerians won a bronze medal.
