President of Côte d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, has said he is considering running for a fourth term. However, the 83-year-old clarified that he has yet to make a final decision. The president made the remarks on Thursday at an event in Abidjan, the nation’s capital.
“I’m in good health and eager to serve my country,” Ouattara stated. “As of today, I have not yet made a decision.”
He added that extending his tenure would only be possible if his party endorsed his candidacy.
Ouattara has held office as president since May 2011.
While Côte d’Ivoire’s constitution limits presidents to two terms, the ruling Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) argued that the 2016 constitutional changes reset the term limits. This interpretation was upheld by the nation’s judiciary in 2020.
In October 2024, senior RHDP officials affirmed their commitment to ensuring Ouattara’s leadership secures victory in the next presidential election, scheduled for October 2025.
