As World celebrates International Women’s Day, President William Ruto has nominated ten additional women as ambassadors to other nations.
While speaking at the Moi stadium in Embu, President Ruto announced that he had chosen six women as deputy ambassadors in acknowledgment of women’s leadership contributions to the nation’s development.
“To show respect for women leadership as we honour the International Women’s day I have appointed 10 women to be our ambassadors and 6 women as deputy ambassadors representing Kenya in various countries,” the president’s office said.
The president of state emphasised that his administration is committed to ensuring inclusive leadership as part of its Bottom Up Transformation Agenda, including the contribution and participation of female leaders in national development.
In November of last year, President William Ruto chose 27 ambassadors to represent Kenya in overseas embassies.
“Through highly intentional interventions our Bottom Up Transformation Agenda prescribes a pathway to transform the conditions, contributions and participation of women in national development by deliberately eliminating every cultural, political, social and other excuse for treating women unjustly,” he said.
President Ruto declared that the Kenya Kwanza government is committed to realising and implementing the constitutional gender inclusion concept, beginning at the political party level for elective representative seats.
“Generally speaking women remain excluded in decision making within our governance and political institutions but on the matter of two thirds gender rule I am happy that Male Members of parliament have now committed that the quest and surge for this solution will be found this time round,” he told reporters.
President Ruto asked for revisions to political party laws to allow women to hold various leadership posts.
During the introduction of the G7 Strategy Plan, Ruto also challenged UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire to amend the party’s constitution to require that if the presidential candidate is male, a woman be the deputy, and vice versa.
