Japan secured their spot at the 2026 World Cup on Thursday, becoming the first team to qualify following a 2-0 home victory over Bahrain.
Despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Oman, South Korea and Australia, who thrashed Indonesia 5-1, are also closing in on qualification.
Japan, led by a second-half brace from Daichi Kamada and Takefusa Kubo, ensured their place in next year’s finals, alongside hosts the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The victory in front of nearly 60,000 fans at Saitama Stadium will mark Japan’s eighth consecutive World Cup appearance. Kamada broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, and Kubo sealed the win with a goal in the 87th minute.
“I’m relieved that we could qualify at home in front of our supporters,” Kubo said after the match, adding that their goal was to compete against the world’s strongest teams at the World Cup.

Australia, with a commanding 5-1 win over Indonesia, remain second in Group C and are in a strong position to join Japan in the World Cup.
Two quick-fire goals from Jackson Irvine and Lewis Miller helped the Socceroos dominate the match, but goalkeeper Mat Ryan admitted the scoreline flattered them.
The Socceroos are currently on 10 points, four ahead of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Bahrain, and China, with three matches remaining.
Meanwhile, South Korea, despite conceding an equaliser late in their 1-1 draw with Oman, lead Group B with 15 points, four clear of second-placed Iraq.
South Korea will face Jordan at home on Tuesday as they aim to extend their lead and secure qualification.
