The Government of Japan, in partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), has taken a significant step to bolster Anambra State’s preparedness for climate-related disasters by officially handing over vital resources aimed at mitigating the impacts of flooding.
The initiative, known as the “Emergency Support to Climate Change” project, was launched in response to the devastating floods that struck the region in 2022. The support package provided to Anambra State includes ten vehicles to boost logistical capabilities, three large trucks, and advanced ICT equipment. Furthermore, two GPS water level detectors have been installed at key riverbank locations, allowing for real-time monitoring and efficient responses to potential flooding events.

At the handover ceremony, Mr. Hitoshi Kozaki, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Anambra’s efforts to address climate challenges. He emphasised that the resources would help save lives and protect property from the devastating impacts of flooding.
In response, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, expressed sincere gratitude to both the Japanese Government and UNOPS for their timely intervention. He highlighted that the resources provided would significantly enhance the state’s capacity to protect its citizens from the dangers of climate-related disasters, further strengthening Anambra’s resilience against future flooding and environmental challenges.
