Jerusalema Producer, Master KG, Wins Best Africa Act Award At MTV EMAs

South Africa’s artiste, Master KG, the producer of hit music, Jerusalema, has won the 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards for the Best Africa Act, ending the four-year domination by Nigerian artistes.

Master KG thanked everyone who made Jerusalema a world-wide hit.

In a virtually recorded acceptance speech Master KG thanked his fans who helped him make the hit song one of the biggest songs on the planet.

“I would love to thank my sister Nomcebo, my team Open Mic Productions, and everyone who has supported Master KG, thank you so much.

“To all my fans all over the world, without you, this would have not been possible,” he said

Jerusalema currently has more than 220 million views on YouTube.

Master KG had been nominated for the MTV award alongside his fellow countryman DJ Maphorisa, Nigeria’s Burna Boy and Uganda’s Sheebah among others.

Burna Boy won the 2019 award with previous recent winners being Nigeria’s Wizkid (2016), Davido (2017) and Tiwa Savage (2018).

“Master KG’s accolades at this year’s MTV EMA’s is a testament to his global popularity which has seen people all over the world unite in dance to his smash hit ‘Jerusalema’ during one of the most unprecedented times in our
history,” said Monde Twala, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ViacomCBS Networks Africa.

“We recognise his great achievement in bringing people together across cultures and congratulate him on this massive win. MTV continues to celebrate all the nominees in the Best African Act category and are proud to elevate local talent across our platforms as we take African pop culture and music to the world.”

The viral track has picked up several accolades throughout the year from going platinum in Italy, to hitting 100 million views on YouTube and becoming one of the most Shazamed songs in the world.

The South African film industry also came together to create a mini-feature of the song.
