Johannesburg Chief Whip of Council Sithembiso Zungu was rushed to the hospital after an unknown armed man fired sporadic shots at officials attending a donation event at Zakariyya Park on Monday.
Zungu and two Rand Water senior officials were reportedly injured when the suspected assassin opened fire at attendees, then scurried away before he could be identified.
The office of the council boss confirmed he was attending to official council business in the south of Johannesburg when the shooting incident occurred, adding that he was receiving medical attention.
“The Office of the Chief Whip of Council can confirm that there was a shooting incident earlier this morning at Zakariyya Park Community Centre, wherein the Councilor of Ward 122, who is also the Chief Whip of Council, Cllr Sithembiso Zungu, sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital. His condition is stable,” the statement said.
Speaker Margaret Arnolds said further details about the incident will be communicated in due time, while urging residents to desist from spreading unconfirmed report.
“I urge residents to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports. The office of the speaker will, at an appropriate time, give a detailed media statement,” she said.
News Central reports that Rand Water Spokesperson Makenosi Maroo, confirmed that one of its employees involved in the shooting incident died from gunshot wounds.
“There was an event where we were going to give out uniforms to pupils. There was a shooting. Somebody has passed away who worked for Rand Water. We are going to issue a statement shortly,” Maroo said.
Sithembiso Zungu was attending the donation event organised to share some basic school essentials to disadvantaged pupils when the gunman attacked.
