The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Geoffrey Makhubo has passed away due to Covid-19 complications. Mayor Makhubo was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital on July 3, 2021.
The City’s spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase said in a statement on Saturday that the late Mayor would remain in hospital “until his medical team is satisfied [with] his recovery”.
He went into self-quarantine on June 20, during which time he committed to continue providing guidance on the containment and management of the spread of Covid-19 in Johannesburg.
The pandemic exposed South Africa’s overstretched facilities as its biggest problem in the health sector.
