Joburg to Get New Mayor Following Phalatse’s Ouster

The City of Johannesburg has removed Mayor Mpho Phalatse of the DA following an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence on Friday.

The City of Johannesburg council went ahead with its special sitting at 10am to debate a motion of no confidence in mayor Mpho Phalatse despite an urgent court interdict.

Council returned to session after the news from the Johannesburg High court.

The Court ordered that the urgent application by the Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse be struck off the court roll with costs.

The DA is not back to take the benches. The speaker wants to see if council reaches quorum before they can move on to the next item on the agenda.

Phalatse had filed an urgent motion urging the court to declare Friday’s sitting unlawful, invalid, null and void.

She also wants the court to declare the programme committee on Thursday that decided on the sitting’s programme did not form a quorum, and its decisions to go ahead with the council sitting was unlawful, invalid and “of no force and effect”.

The City will vote for a new mayor after a motion of no confidence against Phalatse was passed with 139 votes.

Phalatse said yesterday, that she will not be resigning and she intends to complete her electoral term of office.

The no-confidence motion against Phalatse is part of the ANC’s takeover of the city to install the party’s caucus leader, Dada Morero, as mayor.

The IEC will now oversee the process of electing a new Johannesburg Mayor.
