Arsenal Women’s head coach Jonas Eidevall has resigned following a difficult start to the 2024-25 Women’s Super League (WSL) season. The team has managed only one win in their first four matches and currently sits sixth in the league standings.

Assistant coach Renee Slegers will step in as interim head coach.

“We want to thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and his achievements since joining in 2021,” said sporting director Edu. “We respect the dedication he brought to our women’s first team and appreciate his role in the growth and development of Arsenal Women.”

Eidevall signed a three-year contract extension last October after leading the team to consecutive top-three WSL finishes and winning the Women’s League Cup in the last two seasons. However, Arsenal has struggled recently, going winless in their last three matches with one draw and two defeats.

The team suffered a heavy 5-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea just days later.

“Our focus now shifts to finding a new head coach, while fully supporting Renee [Slegers] as she takes interim charge, starting with two important games this week,” Edu added.

Slegers’ first match as interim head coach will be against Norwegian side Valerenga in the Champions League on Wednesday. Arsenal will then face local rivals West Ham, who are 11th and yet to win in the WSL this season.

“Jonas delivered back-to-back trophies for us over the past two seasons, along with many unforgettable moments on the pitch,” said Clare Wheatley, director of women’s football. “We have full confidence in Renee to guide the team during this interim period.”
