Kagame To Extend ‘Lifetime Presidency’ With Fourth Term Ambition

Paul Kagame has been Rwanda’s President for more than twenty years but has hinted at more.

The former Rwanda Patriotic Front leader told a French TV that he’d vie for his country’s Presidency again in 2024.

Kagame had in 2015 masterminded the change of the nation’s constitution to allow him to become President until 2034.

In the 2017 election, he won 99% of the votes cast in a result that left many observers critical of the fast-developing country’s political progress.

“I would consider running for another 20 years. I have no problem with that. Elections are about people choosing, ” Kagame said.

A major point in the history of Rwanda having been a rebel leader, a Vice President and now President. He was also a major figure in the ending of the Rwandan genocide

Rwanda hasn’t been the easiest of places for opposition politicians as they are often gagged, and go through inhumane conditions.

While observers have hailed Kagame’s hand in ensuring Rwanda could be hopeful again, especially as he has warmed up to the Global South, his autocratic style of leadership has left many unimpressed.
