Pathologists who carried out autopsies on six of the fourteen children who died tragically in a stampede at Kakamega Primary School on Monday evening have determined that the students died from suffocation. Thirty nine students were also injured during the incident.
David Mchana, a government pathologist at the Kakamega Referral Hospital said they carried out autopsies on six of the children that yielded the same results.
“We did a limited autopsy because the circumstances are known but all in all, the six all died of suffocation,” he said on Thursday while speaking to the press. He added that post mortems on the rest are ongoing.
A requiem mass will be held on Friday at the Bhukungu stadium in Kakamega for the fourteen students.
According to the school, ten of the victims were in class five and four others were in class four. The cause of the stampede is unknown but police investigations are underway. The school, which now has a total of 3114 students, will remain closed until next Tuesday.
