Nigerian-born UFC fighter Kamaru Usman has become the first African fighter to win an Ultimate Fighting Championship title.

Usman, known as the “Nigerian Nightmare”, dominated defending champion American Tyron Woodley to claim the welterweight title in Las Vegas.

After the victory, Usman said, “You know, you say it. I said you know what, I’m coming for that welterweight strap? but I didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it! You know, I’m a math guy! That’s the answer, this is the formula and now you’ve got to work out the problems in order to be able to get there and you know, tonight was my night”, the newly crowned UFA welterweight champion said.

“In my village where I’m from, there’s still no running water everywhere. People are still struggling to get clean water. So we’re going to put something together, I have an excellent team, a great manager and we’re going to put something together, we’re going to start an amazing foundation and we’re really going to change lives”, he added.

The Nigerian-born Texan and former NCAA Division II wrestler, broke into the UFC in 2015 on its long-running competition reality show. He won his first eight UFC bouts and battered ex-champ Rafael Dos Anjos last November to earn his shot at Woodley’s belt.
