Nigerian-American Mixed Martial Artist, Kamaru Usman on Sunday morning defeated close challenger, Colby Covington via unanimous decision to retain his UFC Welterweight belt.
The match was the headline match on UFC 268 as Covington challenged Usman for the second time. He was battered, bruised, and badly caught by the Nigerian’s attacking forays, with the referee having to separate them on a number of occasions.
Usman, in the Welterweight category, recorded two 48-47 victories over Covington according to the judges’ scorecards and had 49-46 on the third. He had raced on to a good lead before Covington came back from his bruises on the fourth round but it was too little too late as the Nigerian rounded the fight off in the 5th round.
It was Usman’s 5th successful title defence of his Welterweight Championship belt and his 20th victory from 21 fights in the UFC. Nine of his wins in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career were knockout victories.
Recall that Usman defeated Covington in 2019 and had defeated Jorge Masvidal and Gilbert Burns earlier this year.
