After dethroning former champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 278, welterweight champion Leon Edwards has announced that the trilogy fight between the two will take place in March 2023. In August of this year, Edwards completed one of the greatest comebacks in mixed martial arts history by knocking out the former welterweight champion and pound-for-pound king with a devastating head kick with less than a minute remaining in the bout, while he was down in rounds.
Since beginning his MMA career in 2012, this was Usman’s first loss through knockout. A few hours after the defeat, Usman, “the Nigerian Nightmare,” shared a picture on his Instagram expressing a humorous take on the event.
Edwards told the media after the fight that the victory over Usman was the ideal vindication of all of his hard work and perseverance because he had been doubted his whole life.
There was speculation of a grudge battle with Jorge Masvidal after the new welterweight champion’s victory. The two have a lengthy history. However, it appears that Kamaru Usman will have the rematch he deserves without further delay.
