Mayor of Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on Thursday traded words with the government spokesperson on live TV before the debate descended into a showdown and the talk show ended abruptly.
Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago of the opposition FDC party joined two other panelists to discuss the just-concluded by-election.
Videos trending on Twitter showed an agitated Opondo telling the mayor “I can push you out of here!”
Opondo later stood over the mayor amid an exchange of angry words before the programme was taken off-air. All panelists were said to have left the studio safely, while NBS station apologised to viewers.
Mayor Lukwago tweeted that the experience was “horrible” and despicable”.
“My only prayer is that I get out of this place safely,” he added.
