Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has committed ₦670 million to improve maternity and child health services throughout the state and fight hunger.
This was declared at the formal opening of Kumbotso Local Government Area’s second Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) Week.
To combat child and pregnant malnutrition, Governor Yusuf revealed that ₦500 million of the monies will be used as counterpart financing to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for several nutrition initiatives.
Additionally, ₦170 million has been set aside for the modernisation and refurbishment of treatment and referral facilities for malnutrition.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the health and welfare of Kano’s most vulnerable people during his remarks at the event.
The governor declared, “This administration is resolute in its mission to fight malnutrition and prevent diseases that threaten our children’s lives.” “We are taking a bold step towards ensuring a healthier and brighter future for our children and families by committing these funds.”

The goal of MNCH Week is to provide essential healthcare services, such as vaccinations, prenatal care, and dietary supplements. Public health awareness initiatives aimed at women and children in Kano State are another component of the program.
Governor Yusuf emphasised that these initiatives are a component of a larger plan to lower maternal and infant mortality rates and improve the state’s healthcare system.
He explained, “These interventions are essential to our overall strategy to strengthen Kano’s healthcare system.” “We are committed to promoting sustainable development and guaranteeing universal access to high-quality healthcare services.”
The announcement was released by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, who called the investment a “landmark move” that demonstrates the administration’s consistent commitment to addressing health issues.
“The governor’s vision is clear: no child in Kano should be malnourished or without access to basic healthcare services,” Bature said. The lives of thousands of families will be significantly improved by this funding.
The idea was praised by the community leaders and healthcare professionals present, who expressed hope that the money would have a major influence on the state’s healthcare system.
A paediatrician at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital named Dr. Amina Bello stated, “This is a timely intervention.
“We can make real progress with this level of government commitment, as malnutrition is a major issue in Kano.”
