The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has said that his government will not tolerate any groups promoting or advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) rights in the state.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, Governor Yusuf instructed the Hisbah to investigate and take action against any groups suspected of engaging in LGBTQ+ activities, stating that these actions are against the norms, values, and moral standards of the people of Kano.

Dantiye also announced that the government has taken steps to consult with religious leaders on how to curb such activities in the state.

“I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, even though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBT activities in Kano.

“As you know, 98% of Kano’s population are Muslims by faith, and our religion is against this immorality, so we can’t accept it.

The commissioner stated that the government received citizens’ concerns about groups promoting LGBTQ+ activities in the state.

“We also discussed this with the governor, and he directed Hisbah to investigate and crack down on them. We will take legal action as appropriate.”

News Central reports that controversy has trailed the Nigerian Government‘s recent signing of the Samoa Agreement.

Nigerians are concerned that the deal could promote LGBTQ+ rights in the country. However, the Presidency has clarified that the Samoa Agreement is not intended to promote LGBTQ+ or same-sex unions in Nigeria.
