Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has informed the press that 70 people remain unaccounted for after a fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in central Kenya.

Gachagua urged parents who had collected their children after the overnight fire in the boys’ dormitory, along with neighbours who assisted fleeing students, to report to the authorities.

Speaking outside the school after meeting with parents, the Deputy President stated that investigators will prepare a report that will be made public upon completion. He assured that the government will support families with burials and aid hospitals.

Distraught parents await updates on the condition of their wards caught in school dormitory fire.

“We are just about to begin a very difficult exercise, to take the parents to the scene,” Gachagua said.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross is operating a temporary trauma center at the school, providing counseling to 59 children and planning to relocate the operation to Mt Kenya Hospital in Nyeri later in the day.
