Kenya Arrests Man With Sh10m Processed Ivory

Kenyan authorities have arrested a man for being in possession of processed ivory worth Sh10m.

The suspect, who was sid to have processed the ivory into ornaments, was nabbed at the weekend on the Isinya-Kajiado highway while riding on a motorcycle.

Police suspect the ornaments were being transported to be repackaged for export.

The culprit was nabbed by personnel of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) who responded to a tip-off.

He is expected in court on Monday.

This is the latest arrest despite campaigns to discourage the trend. Kenya’s Wildlife Management Act 2013 says that any person who keeps or is found in possession of a wildlife trophy without permission shall be liable upon conviction to a fine of not less than Sh1 million or imprisonment for a term of not less than five years or both.

KWS is putting in place strong measures across all entry and exit points, border checks and international airports to curb any illegal wildlife activities.

Dozens of suspects including foreigners are frequently arrested at the airport with the trophies.
