The recently impeached Vice President of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, has been called in by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to provide a formal statement following his claims of assassination attempts.
The DCI announced that it would thoroughly investigate the matter to determine the truth behind these allegations.
In a letter dated October 21 and signed by DCI officer J.K. Marete, Gachagua was requested to appear at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road on Tuesday, October 22.
The agency stressed that the accusations were too serious to ignore, especially considering Gachagua’s high-ranking position.
“These are serious allegations emanating from a person of your stature and cannot be taken lightly. In light of the seriousness of this matter, we kindly request your presence on 22nd October 2024 at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters, Mazingira Complex-Kiambu Road, to formally record your statement to enable prompt and thorough investigations into the matter,” the letter read.
The DCI further emphasised its commitment to handling the case with the appropriate level of care.
“We understand the sensitivity of the allegations and assure you that this matter will be handled with the seriousness it deserves. Your statement is a crucial component of our investigation,” the letter added.
Gachagua’s remarks, made during a public interview on October 20 after his return from hospital, have drawn national attention. He alleged that President William Ruto’s government made two attempts to poison him before orchestrating his impeachment.
The former deputy president detailed that the first attempt took place in Kisumu County, where undercover security agents allegedly laced his food with poison. The second attempt occurred in Nyeri County, involving suspected National Intelligence Service officers who tried to poison him again.
