Kenya has declared Friday, May 10, a national holiday to remember and mourn those who tragically lost their lives in the ongoing floods.
Over 200 people have died from the severe floods that have battered the country for weeks.
President William Ruto said on Wednesday that the day would allow Kenyans to plant trees to mitigate the effects of climate change, which has been responsible for the severe floods. He also directed that schools re-open on Monday, May 13.
The government spokesman, Isaac Mwaura, said a special notice designating Friday as National Tree-Growing Day would be issued, adding that the Environment Minister will then give further clarifications.
Last year, the government took a significant step towards tackling climate change by designating a special day to plant 100 million trees as part of an initiative to plant 1.5 billion trees within a decade.
