The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has fired four of its officials found holding a meeting at the home of a former MCA aspirant in Homa Bay County.

Homa Bay County IEBC returning officer Fredrick Apopa said the officials did wrong by attending the meeting.

“You cannot be in a meeting with politicians when the law requires you to be neutral,” he said.

Apopa said the officials are reported to have been meeting, among them, an MCA and a parliamentary aspirant from a political party. It is not clear what the group was discussing.

Residents of Kanyikela stormed the meeting and took the suspects to police claiming that they were planning to manipulate Tuesday’s election.

Apopa said investigators are looking into this and will take necessary action if they are found to have committed an electoral offence.

“The outcome of the investigation will determine whether they will be charged. It will be up to police and the office of the Director of Public Protection to take legal action against them,” the IEBC official said.

The meeting which took place at Riat village, had a presiding officer, two deputy presiding officers and a clerk in Kanyikela in attendance.

Residents disrupted their discussion and led them to the police station. Apopa said IEBC will immediately replace the incriminated officers.
