Police in Migori, Kenya, shot dead four people who attempted to invade a police station on Thursday evening.
The four were reportedly accompanying Mr Moses Mwangi’s body from the mortuary when they erupted into a riot and stormed the Isebania Police Station, where they demanded explanations for the recent spike in local insecurity.
They used a pickup truck loaded with stones to attack the station and wreck property there.
The mob reportedly started breaking windows at the station’s armoury and other offices while carrying pangas and machetes, according to a police report.
They then went on to smash open the cell doors in an effort to release those who had been detained.
The police opened fire with live ammunition to frighten away the rioters who were attacking the firearms when they realised they were being outnumbered.
“They began tearing down the cell gates while yelling for everyone who was being held captive to be freed. Part of the police report stated, “The officers defended the station’s armoury and prevented the forceful rescue of prisoners in custody and theft of firearms by use of live ammunition after overrunning the officers in charge of the report office, armoury, and cells.
The four were immediately killed as a result of this.
After learning what had occurred, the crowd became enraged and began fighting with the police on the streets.
Tear gas had to be used by the police to scatter them.
During the incident, an officer who was guarding the armoury suffered injuries to his body and eyes.
They transported the four unidentified bodies to St. Akidiva Mindira Mabera Hospital.
