A court has released sixteen people accused of sexual assault on a female diplomat in Kenya’s capital, including motorbike taxi drivers, an incident that triggered nationwide outrage.
On Monday, the main suspect in the sexual assault case, Zachariah Nyaora Obadia, was charged.
The prosecution stated that there was insufficient evidence to charge the 16 individuals who were apprehended and imprisoned roughly two weeks ago.
Nyaora was apprehended later at a border crossing when he attempted to flee to Tanzania.
The men were accused of attacking the victim in public on a popular Nairobi street.
The woman screamed for help as she was stripped of her clothes and molested, and a video of the incident was extensively posted on social media.
It spurred the President to issue an executive order cracking down on renegade motorcycle riders, despite widespread outrage and requests for tighter industry regulation.
