Former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga alleged that during anti-government demonstrations on Thursday, his car had been shot at seven times and that it was an attempt on his life.

During a press conference, Odinga claimed that police had targeted his car as well as the vehicles of other opposition leaders during a protest procession in Nairobi’s Eastlands neighborhood.

Additionally, he stated that there were intentions to attack the offices of the prominent Royal Media Services organisation in Nairobi and that police had targeted journalists during the anti-government riots.

Odinga criticised the international community for allegedly failing to take action against alleged government violations of human rights during the protests.

He declared that on April 3, the opposition would stage a significant demonstration to put pressure on the government to implement electoral changes and cut living expenses, among other demands.

Six journalists were hurt during the demonstrations on Thursday, bringing the total number of media professionals hurt since the demonstrations started last week to 22.

“The United States is deeply concerned by recent reports of attacks against journalists. Protecting press freedom and safety is a cornerstone of democracy,” ambassador Meg Whitman tweeted on Friday morning.
