As vote counting continues nationwide following Tuesday’s elections, Kenya‘s education minister has postponed the reopening of schools until next Monday.
On Thursday, the schools were supposed to reopen. In Kenya, there are hundreds of primary and secondary schools that serve as voting locations.
In a statement, Prof George Magoha has apologised for inconveniences of the delay, but said the government was keen on “ensuring the safety and comfort of learners through this period”.
As parents rushed to pick up their children from schools on short notice, chaotic scenes resulted from last week’s decision to close schools unexpectedly, which caught many schools and parents off guard.
It can take a few days before the official election results are made public.Although voting has been extended in locations where polls opened later, polls are now officially concluded.
This vote comes after a heated campaign that was dominated by discussions about cost of living, unemployment, and corruption.
Former prime minister Raila Odinga and current vice president William Ruto are the front-runners for the presidency.
Additionally, Kenyans were choosing a new parliament and municipal governments. The collation of the presidential votes was to be given priority as the vote-counting process got underway at the polling places shortly after they closed.
When Odinga went to vote earlier in Kibra, one of his strongholds in Nairobi’s capital, he was surrounded by fans.
