President William Ruto on Monday, disclosed plans for his government to provide financial aid to flood-affected households in Nairobi.
Each affected household will receive Ksh10,000 to assist them in securing alternative accommodation, especially for those who have lost their homes.
Addressing the issue in the Kiamaiko area of Mathare slums on April 6, 2024, President Ruto stressed his administration’s dedication to supporting displaced families during this difficult period.
He assured affected families that their names had been recorded and that financial assistance for accommodation would be provided for the next three months while their situations are addressed.
President Ruto said he would ensure that the allocated funds reach the intended beneficiaries, warning against any attempts at corruption.
He sympathised with victims for the loss suffered, including damage to homes and belongings.
In addition to addressing immediate needs, the government has secured ample food supplies to sustain the flood victims until they are resettled.
President Ruto also announced a substantial government allocation of Ksh1 billion for the construction of new schools in Nairobi as part of the government’s commitment to improving education infrastructure in the country.
The flood situation in Kenya remains dire, with 42,526 households displaced and approximately 212,630 people affected as of Sunday, May 5, 2024.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura provided updates, indicating that 138 camps have been set up across 18 counties, which accommodate 62,061 people.
Sadly, the death toll from the floods has reached 228 individuals as of the same date.
