Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) is constructing 10 new stations in Nairobi and its satellite cities in order to improve passenger numbers and bring its services closer to commuters.
Because of the distant locations of several stations and the frequent breakdowns of its trains, KRC is counting on the ten to win over more travelers forced to utilize crowded highways.
Kibera, Kenyatta University, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Satellite, and Mutindwa, Lukenya, and Konza in Machakos are among the forthcoming stations.
In an interview with the Business Daily, KRC Managing Director Philip Mainga said, “Right now, we have roughly three stations in Kibera.”
“We recently finished Mukuru Kwa Njenga,” he continued. The Kenyatta University station, as well as numerous others, are still operational.”
In order to improve commuter services, KRC has been updating its infrastructure in Nairobi.
President Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated the redesigned Nairobi Commuter Rail Service (NCRS) and the restored Diesel Multiple Units in December 2020. (DMUs). There were 11 DMUs and Commuter Rail Buses in all.
The project is part of the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Master Plan, which aimed to modernize and expand underutilized railway transportation in order to alleviate traffic congestion on city streets.
The mobile units, according to NMS, will relieve traffic congestion in the capital by offering an alternate mode of transportation.
The Nairobi Central Railway Station serves as the nerve centre of operations connecting with the DMUs that ply city routes, which include Embakasi Village, Pipeline and Donholm Railway Stations.
Commuter train services are now available on the Nairobi-Imara Daima-Syokimau line, Nairobi-Githurai-Mwiki-Kahawa-Ruiru route, Nairobi-Embakasi route, and Nairobi-Kibera-Kikuyu route.
The NCRS will, according to Kenya Railways, build an efficient and inexpensive mass rapid transit system for the city, as well as connect rail with other forms of transportation in the country.
The project was designed to offer commuter train services between Nairobi Railway Station and the existing railway routes.
Mutuini, Dagoretti Market, Thogoto, Gitaru, Aviation, Kariobangi South, Membley, and Strathmore/Madaraka are among the upcoming developments.
