Despite falling in their African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying ties, both Kenya and Tanzania secured their places in the 2025 CHAN tournament, scheduled for February.
As co-hosts of the event—reserved exclusively for players competing domestically—Kenya, Tanzania, and fellow host Uganda are guaranteed spots in the finals. Their participation in qualifiers was intended to give them match practice rather than relying on friendlies.
South Sudan advanced over Kenya, winning 3-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Kampala, while Tanzania lost a penalty shootout 6-5 to Sudan after a 1-1 aggregate tie. Eswatini also progressed by defeating Zimbabwe in both legs, marking a milestone win under coach Zdravko Logarusic, despite the team’s stadium challenges.
These CHAN matches count toward FIFA world rankings, giving these national teams a chance to build their competitive standing.
