According to the interior ministry, at least 200 guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been recovered in Kenya‘s northern Marsabit county as part of an ongoing operation to bring peace to the region.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, there are over 5,000 illegal guns in the community.

A joint security team has been conducting a sweep to confiscate illegal firearms from the general public.

Officials say some of the guns were surrendered to them.

The government has also extended the area’s dusk-to-dawn curfew for another 30 days. For the past two months, the county has been under curfew.

Ethnic violence has already claimed many lives in the northern county, and a recent escalation in clashes has been blamed on political incitement as campaigning for the August general election heats up.

In addition, the region has been suffering from a severe drought in recent months.

The drought has put a strain on common resources like water and pastures, putting families at risk of starvation.
