The Milimani High Court in Nairobi on Thursday, issued an order to temporarily stop the police from enforcing a recent ban on protests in the city’s Central Business District (CBD).
The court’s decision came after a petition was filed challenging the ban, which was imposed by the Inspector General of Police.
Justice Bahati Mwamuye issued a conservatory order, meaning the ban on protests is suspended until the court makes a final decision on the matter.
The court also directed the Acting Inspector General of Police to inform all officers about this order and ensure it is followed promptly.
The petition was filed in response to the police‘s ban on protests in the CBD, which was announced on July 17, 2024.
Parties involved will return to court on July 29, 2024, for further directions on the case.
