Kenyan government declares national holiday to mourn former President Moi

The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Interior has today declared Tuesday, February 11 2020, the day of the late President Moi’s memorial service, a national holiday. A period of mourning had previously been declared by presidential proclamation from February 4, the day of Moi’s passing to the date of his burial, which has been set for February 12.

The former President is to be accorded a State Funeral with full civilian and military ceremonial honours. According to State House, the cortege will leave Lee Funeral Home at 8:05 am on Saturday morning in a solemn procession that will follow Valley Road, Kenyatta Avenue and Parliament Way to the Parliament buildings. Here, President Moi’s remains will lie in state from Saturday, February 8 to Monday, February 10.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will lead mourners in viewing the body of former President Daniel Moi at Parliament on Saturday. Members of the public are expected to access the grounds and view the body over the course of the three days.

Addressing the media on Thursday, the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua said, “the Head of State will be the first person to view the body at Parliament followed by the family members.”

A national memorial service is slated for February 11 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The inter-demonitional service is to be led by the Africa Inland Church. The remains will thereafter be flown to Moi’s home in Kabarak for interment on Wednesday, February 12.

The late Daniel Toroitich arap Moi served as Kenya’s second president for the period between 1978 and 2002.
