A Kenya lawmaker has been arrested by the police in Transmara East for insulting the country’s president.
Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno, a lawmaker, was arrested for using abusive and demeaning language against President Uhuru Kenyatta over the weekend.
The police said the intent of his comments was to incite communities.
The legislator was arrested on Monday at his Mogondo home shortly before 4.30pm. Ng’eno was arrested following the remarks he made on Sunday at Murkan. The police say his comments were aimed at inciting communities.
He will appear in court on Tuesday.
A video clip of the MP’s utterances on the fallout between President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto has circulated widely on social media.
He is heard telling the president to dissolve the government and quit if he is uncomfortable working with Mr Ruto.
“You are not Kenya and Kenya is not Kenyatta’s or Mama Ngina’s land. This land belongs to 47 million Kenyans, you cannot run it as you wish,” the legislator said.
He warned Uhuru to run the state constitutionally or go to Gatundu – his home. He added that Kenyatta should also not dictate who will succeed him.
“Moi and Kibaki finished their terms and left, you should do the same next year when the time comes.” the MP added.
When his constituents got wind that the law enforcers were on the lookout for him, they stormed his home trying to guard him.
The police officers fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd, but the group stayed put.
The MP’s supporters escorted him from his home to Emurua Dikirr police station about six kilometres away.
This is the third time Ng’eno is being arrested over inciting remarks. In September last year, the Kenyan legislator was arrested with and Ololulunga MCA Jafferson Langat and his Ilmotiok counterpart Samuel Kositany at Olmekenyu trading centre in Narok South on their way to Mau Forest to independently assess the situation following planned evictions.
In the second incident on February 24 this year, Ng’eno was arrested with Langat – Ololulunga – and Stanley Langat – Ilkerin – at Kimogoro trading centre in Narok South sub county for holding an illegal meeting on the Building Bridges Initiative.
