Protesters in Kenya are calling for President William Ruto to resign, even though he withdrew a controversial bill to raise taxes.
The Finance Bill 2024 had led to protests where over 20 people were killed by police, and others severely injured.
Despite the bill’s withdrawal, many protesters still want the president to step down. They plan to occupy the State House.
While some protesters feel their demands were met, while others insist only Ruto’s resignation will satisfy them.
Ruto defended the need for tax hikes but admitted the public rejected the bill and promised to cut the presidential budget and start talks with the youth.
Protests have spread widely, involving many who are frustrated with high living costs and corruption.
News Central reports that security has been beefed up in Nairobi in anticipation of the protests. Kenyan police put up roadblocks on streets leading to the presidential palace on Thursday, as protesters vowed to occupy the State House, chanting “Ruto Must Go!”
