Some public schools in Kenya are set to resume learning for the second term on Monday, May 13 after two postponements due to flood concerns.
Following the announcement, parents expressed worries about their children’s safety considering the present condition of school infrastructure and environment.
Responding to these concerns, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu reassured parents that safety measures have been put in place, including clear instructions to school drivers and teacher supervision during student drop-offs and pickups.
Machogu noted that 95 per cent of schools are ready to reopen, as efforts are underway to address safety concerns in seven counties.
Resumption for some of the schools adversely affected by the floods will be delayed, as the Ministry, in collaboration with other government agencies, will need time to repair damaged facilities to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for students upon resumption.
News Central reports that torrential rains caused devastating floods in Kenya, where over 277 have been reported killed, thousands of households displaced and nearly 2,000 schools destroyed.
Following the tragic events, the government ordered all remaining schools to be shut down until further notice.
