Kenyan University Graduate Develops App for Dropping, Picking Students (News Central TV)

Kelvin Njenga, a graduate from the Department of Mathematics Computer Science from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Science and Technology, has developed an app for dropping off and picking up students from school.

Njenga, 29, said schools and parents usually find transport a challenge for pupils and there is always no proper communication between both parties, hence the reason for inventing the app.

He said he was touched when he saw pupils in Limuru waiting in the cold for their school bus.

Njenga said; “Some days are quite chilly in Limuru, and on this particular morning, when I was travelling to Machakos for a conference I witnessed a group of children shivering in the early morning cold waiting for the bus.”

In August 2020, Njenga developed the Schoolbus Track all with a view to solving this challenge. The app makes it easy for parents to track their kids’ drop and pick off times. It targets all schools with a bus that is used to commute pupils to and from school.

The app notifies parents when the school bus is ferrying the pupils to either pick or drop them off. The app also allows the school to manage the buses, coordinate students for a particular route

He said; “With the app, kids will no longer be standing in the early morning cold waiting for a bus which they have no idea of its location, and whether it broke down or not.

“This, in turn, reduces the number of calls between the parents and the driver, allowing parents to continue working with a peace of mind while monitoring their kids.”
